I've earned the Infrared Certified® title and hold the role of an InterNACHI® Infrared Certified® Thermography Inspector. I rely on a top-notch infrared camera that goes beyond the naked eye to spot issues that might not be readily visible.

 

This nifty device translates heat patterns into colors on a scale, with warmer areas showing up as lighter shades and cooler or damp spots appearing as darker hues. By analyzing these images, I can pinpoint energy loss sources, detect potential moisture problems, flag risky hot spots in the electrical setup, and uncover other concerns such as wood-damaging pests, rodent infestations, and even chimney flue leaks that could pose carbon monoxide risks.

 

My infrared certification brings an added level of depth and accuracy to my inspections, ensuring that I can provide a more thorough assessment of your property.

Folks often reach out to me when they notice a water stain on their ceiling, seeking assistance in tracking down the source. While thermography can confirm the presence of water in the ceiling, it's most effective when paired with a top-notch moisture meter. To assess the situation, I might head up to the attic above the ceiling to check for signs of a roof leak, HVAC duct condensation, or a pipe leak. However, relying solely on the camera might not always pinpoint the issue. The camera gives clues, which, when combined with other data, help unravel the defect's origin.

It's important to note that a thermal imaging camera isn't a magic wand; it's an additional tool in my arsenal. To wield it effectively, I've undergone training and certification from InterNACHI®, mastering both its mechanics and optimal application.

This training also delves into building science, covering concepts like hydrodynamics and thermodynamics that illuminate how water and heat move. Armed with this knowledge, I comprehend the physics behind thermal imaging, the technology itself, the basics of building science, and how to use thermal imaging for various scenarios.

Thermal (infrared) imaging hinges on detecting temperature disparities in objects. It involves deploying infrared-detecting devices to evaluate a building's envelope, unveiling thermal patterns that reveal energy loss, latent moisture, electrical issues, or structural intricacies.

Instead of visualizing shapes and colors, my infrared camera allows me to "see" heat. Yet, effectively utilizing thermal imaging necessitates not just possessing the camera, but also the expertise to wield it accurately and interpret its visual output. Remember, owning a trowel doesn't make you a mason, and owning an infrared camera doesn't make you a thermographer.
